Despite only being on the calendar for five years, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has become a race that all in Formula One look forward to. It is easy to only like the old classic circuits and whilst most of my favourite races are at places like Spa and Monza, there are a couple of more recent venues that make on to the list of races that I suggest fans take a trip to. Abu Dhabi would be one of them.
Maybe it’s because by November and almost 20 weeks on the road, we all need a little sunshine and sparkle in our lives and the Emirate certainly provides that. From Ferrari World, to the Louvre to dessert safaris there is something for everyone but there is much more to Abu Dhabi than just money and make believe.
In terms of a circuit, the Yas Marina doesn’t provide the most exciting of Grand Prix, although 2012 was an exception and had Kimi Raikkonen not been taken out at the start of Sunday’s race, then who knows what he would’ve done from 22nd on the grid. Maybe the iceman would have melted his way through the field and helped create a thrilling race.
The one thing noticeable about the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is how relaxed everyone is, especially this year. We left India on the Monday and all arrived on the same day to Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Whilst India is an incredible country it is not the easiest to work in, tackling cows and tuk tuks and the occasional elephant on a minimum one hour journey to the circuit! Abu Dhabi though might seem more boring but we can walk from the island to the circuit and that immediately makes everyone more relaxed. Also the later start means you can sleep, gym, swim, relax or all of the above before it is time to work! Work hard , play hard is a mantra in the world of F1.
The championship of course had been won in India which meant at Red Bull at least, the atmosphere was pretty relaxed. Sebastian Vettel couldn’t stop smiling apart from when his team mate Mark Webber beat him to pole position on the Saturday night. By Sunday night the smile was back. 11 wins and he is still on course to equal the record for 13 victories in one year, currently held by his good friend Michael Schumacher.
As well as the action off track, there is plenty for fans to head to the Grand Prix for. As a Presenter for BBC, it was noticeable how many British fans had come to the event and wanted to stop and chat. Sunshine and sport was the perfect mix for them, especially when you have 6 degrees in the UK and 36 in the Middle East! For those who want to party a little longer there are some great pop up clubs too on the island. Ultimately though when the music and dancing stops, there are some cars to watch! I knew I was there for a reason!
Saturday’s in Abu Dhabi are notoriously long. For some reason, qualifying spells trouble and long nights. 2012, when Vettel’s car was being investigated and ultimately excluded for a fuel problem, we were all there until after 11pm. This year, thanks to the floor on Kimi Raikonnen’s Lotus, again it was a very late night. The picture behind the scenes, with drivers and teams hanging around to find out the outcome of their friends/mostly rivals is always interesting. And with Lotus, Ferrari and Mercedes all battling it out for 2nd in the constructors championship, the interest in where Kimi would start was high!
Race day is obviously the best day of a Grand Prix weekend. To be on the grid in Abu Dhabi is always special, the celebrities, the noise, the bagpipes (which for a Scottish girl is always nice and slightly strange to hear in a desert) and the flyover from giant Etihad bird! Before you know it the engines reach fever pitch and the first of 55 laps is under way. The other thing that takes you by surprise is that the light has faded and night has fallen on the island.
One of my favourite memories of this year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was looking up to see the magical partial eclipse of the sun. Not even Bernie Ecclestone could buy that. It was truly a wonder to see and summed up another fabulous time in Abu Dhabi.
