Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaró says that his injured hand is “healing well” as he works to return to full fitness ahead of the 2018 MotoGP season.
Espargaró sustained a fracture to the fourth metacarpal of his left hand in a crash at the Australian Grand Prix and missed the following round in Malaysia to undergo surgery.
He returned to action at the season finale in Valencia, and stayed on for the post-race test, but admitted that the weekend was “demanding”.
As a precaution, Espargaró skipped three further days of testing at Jerez.
Espargaró, currently only training on his road bike, hopes to reach “good physical fitness” for the first test of 2018 at Sepang in late January.
“My injured hand is healing well,” said Espargaró.
“Valencia was demanding and we also had two rather important days of testing right after the race.
“At the moment I am only training on the road with my bicycle, but the idea is to begin a bit of offroad at the end of the year, [and] at that time, we’ll be able to test the real conditions of my hand.
“I want to be in the best possible physical conditions after the break.
“I can’t wait to get back in the saddle of the RS-GP for the Sepang tests.”
Espargaró placed 15th in the 2017 standings with a best finish of sixth.
